Service Learning, Software Engineering, and Hurricane Katrina - A Case Study

چکیده
This application, developed by students in service learning courses, will be used both by workers at the Red Cross to find and solicit volunteers and by volunteers who want to keep track of their volunteerwork history and Red Cross certifications. By capturing such knowledge in an easily accessible database, Red Cross workers can use our intuitive front end to rapidly find the workers they need with speed and accuracy not possible with their paperbased system. In accordance with the mission statement of the American Red Cross Disaster Services, our application helps to “reduce human suffering by helping people prevent, prepare for, and recover from natural and other disasters.” [1] The original implementation uses PHP for the interface and application with a MySQL database; future versions will use JavaServer Faces for the interface and application. This paper describes the implemented system and the benefits of incorporating service learning into Computer Science courses.

متن کاملEngineering education in the wake of hurricane Katrina
Living through hurricane Katrina and its aftermath and reflecting on these experiences from technical and non-technical standpoints has led me to reconsider my thoughts and philosophy on engineering education. I present three ideas regarding engineering education pedagogy that I believe will prepare future engineers for problem-solving in an increasingly complex world. They are (1) we must prac...

Team Reach Out Biloxi is a nursing student-initiated service-learning project with the goal of providing ongoing assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. On 6 different occasions from 2005 to 2008, Purdue nursing students integrated their leadership skills with application of public health knowledge, compassion, and concern as they worked in partnership with the Gulfport region Coastal F...
متن کاملLessons from 9/11 and Katrina
An engineering lesson derived from the tragedies of the 9/11 Pentagon crash and Hurricane Katrina is the importance of resiliency in designing for multiple hazards. In the case of the Pentagon, the energy-absorbing capacity, redundancy, and continuity of the structural frame reduced the consequences of the unanticipated action. In Katrina, the hurricane protection system breached in forty-six p...
متن کاملNetwork Service Disruption upon Natural Disaster: Inference Using Sensory Measurements and Human Inputs
Natural disasters cause large-scale network service interruption which corresponds to unreachability of networks. This problem relates to how networks respond under extreme conditions, and it is neither well-studied nor well-understood. To infer network service disruption, challenges arise, i.e., how to use heterogeneous data that include sensory measurements and human inputs? This work shows a...
